Bahá'u'lláh's Surah of Sorrows is a lament on the fate of the Bab, the Manifestation of God Who both preceded and predicted the advent of a new revelation from God. Bahá'u'lláh links His message with the revelations of the past, including those of Christ, Muhammad, and the Bab, and announced Himself the "human temple of Baha." Bahá'u'lláh describes how the people of the Qur'an mistreated the Bab, and links that treatment to the Jewish rejection of Christ and the Christian rejection of Muhammad. Bahá'u'lláh then describes and laments the Bab's martyrdom.
Describing this tablet as simply a lament for the Bab is not entirely accurate. Bahá'u'lláh uses the Bab's example to draw comparisons with the misfortunes falling upon the newly-established Bahai faith. Bahá'u'lláh also refers to his half-brother, Subh-i-Azal and his followers, and refutes their authority and denounces their rejection of Bahá'u'lláh's revelation. Bahá'u'lláh concludes by testifying to the power of the Cause of God and notes that the revelation of this Cause to mankind is not affected by the betrayal of his half-brother or by the rejection of unbelievers The Surah of Sorrows will make little sense to those who are not already at least partly acquainted with the Bahai faith in relation to the Babi faith, and the early history and personalities of the Bahai faith.
