Little is definitely known about the life of Herodotus, who is remembered as the "father of history." Born in Halicarnassus on the western coast of modern Turkey, he lived in the 5th century BCE and during his life traveled extensively throughout Asia Minor, Greece, and southern Italy.

While this work is entitled The Histories, Herodotus covers many subjects outside the eponymous academic discipline. With a focus primarily on the Persian Wars between Persia and the ancient city-states of Greece, Herodotus touches on subjects including anthropology, art and architecture, ethnology, zoology, and geography. But his expressed focus is to recount and thereby memorialize, "human achievements" and "great and marvelous deeds." Throughout The Histories, Herodotus recounts many fables and folktales with varying levels of plausibility, but given the age and technology at his disposal, The Histories of Herodotus stands as an achievement of value equal to and often surpassing the "great and marvelous deeds" he recounts.
